The purpose of these pictures is to show phases of going through a loss of something – shock, recognition, depression, desperation and then eventual relief from the “drought”. This series came to life after I experienced loss of creativity and then hoped that there would be some relief from that difficult period of time, although after completing these pictures I can see I wanted to show something more deep and personal. It was important to me to have Slavic mythology elements in this, with a strong connection to the land, nature with a touch of surrealism. Although skeletons are not commonly used in Slavic mythology, I wanted this adversary to be recognizable globally, especially as depicted in the Depression phase, picture #5. In the end, I wanted the series to seem like a folk tale that’s been passed down by our ancestors, and to show how our main hero in the story survived this dark time and was saved by a divine and surreal entity.
